President's Report 2005

September 30, 2005

2005 started out great! Our spring fling was the IAN ROBERTS Clinic held on the long weekend in May at Hobby Horse Farm. With 20 riding participants and lots of spectators, it was a wonderful way to start our very short season. We're just getting going in the Maritimes while others have been riding outside for months or down in Florida – just not fair!

Ian's clinic was fabulous on all accounts. The only damper (and I do mean DAMP) was the pouring rain on Sunday which forced the cross-country schooling to the indoor arena. The fields were flooded. It continued to rain for two weeks straight – most depressing spring weather.

Most, if not all, competitions in the Maritimes had lower than normal #'s of entries this year. Likely high gas prices may have had something to do with it, and there were some unfortunate conflicts with clinics/competitions. We need to make every effort to avoid conflicts in order to support each other as "Maritime" eventing, but sometimes conflicts are inevitable.

While the sport is looking healthier in N.B. with at least two new Horse Trials sites and ongoing progression at Foshay, Nova Scotia's competitions took a hard hit this year. Three competitions were cancelled in 2005. The second HT in Cape Breton didn't go as the Organizer was simply out of energy after also putting on a two day Hunter/Jumper show. Red Bank Combined Test was also cancelled – insurance expense and a lack of entries. Applewood had to be cancelled at last minute as Allister Marshall was to undergo surgery on short notice. Sadly, Mr. Marshall passed away on September 27 due to complications from that surgery. Applewood Farms has been a constant in our eventing schedule – held in support of the Annapolis Valley Hunt – always on the Sunday of Labour Day weekend. I am confident that the Applewood Farm Horse Trials
will continue. I am sure Allister would have wanted that.

We are proud to have had a Young Rider from Nova Scotia, Samantha Forsyth, compete on the Gold Medal *Star non-Championship Team at NAYRC. She joins Megan White who competed at NAYRC a few years ago.

In addition, three Nova Scotian riders were in the results from Plantation Fields H.T. in Unionville, PA. Most notably, Sarah Anderson and Against All Odds (aka Odie), a homebred gelding, who WON the IR Intermediate division. They had an awesome dressage performance – way ahead of the field. Sarah, from Kentville NS, is attending University at Queens U. in Kingston and is currently training with Lorraine Laframboise.
Sarah was hoping to compete at Radnor as well.

Rob Haldane from Halifax, N.S. spent the latter part of the summer as a working student with Darren Chiacchia and has purchased a new horse, Pirate. Rob and Pirate were 5th in the Training YR division.

We are also very proud of Julie Ansems, from Port Williams, N.S., who is Barn Manager for Buck Davidson. She is currently campaigning her young horse, Cardinal Sin. Look for them in the Preliminary Division at some major events in the US next summer.
