HTNS2009 Awards
President's Report 2009
Nova Scotia has kept a steady membership of approximately 50 – 60 per year for the last several years. We haven't seen much growth in the membership, but at least we are maintaining.
Three one-day Horse Trials were held in 2009. These three are spread out around the province, so there is interest throughout the province, not just in one area. The competitions are held at Central Nova in Truro in July; Ben Eoin in Cape Breton in August; and Hobby Horse in the Annapolis Valley in late August this year (a change from their usual date in Sept.), with Central Nova and Hobby Horse seeing the bulk of the entries with between 45 – 55.
It is also worth mentioning that the Hobby Horse competition has been forced to do a last-minute schedule change of Sat. from Sunday due to the threat of Hurricane Bill this year. This has happened to this particular Horse Trials once before as well. Although the event site is inland, the hurricane still brought high winds and torrential rain. Definitely not good riding or trailering weather!
In addition to competing at the Horse Trials in Nova Scotia, many riders also enter the events in New Brunswick and Prince Edward Island. A few Martime riders from N.S. and N.B. successfully competed at Bromont and Napierville in Quebec this year as well.
Horse Trials Nova Scotia hosted a two-day clinic with Ian Roberts at Hobby Horse in June of this year, which was well attended and included several riders from New Brunswick. We also held two cross-country schooling days with local coaches Andy Wadowski and Alexandra Beaton. I believe there was a jumping clinic with Lori LeBlanc at Ben Eoin as well. We were fortunate to have Peter Gray come to the Martimes this summer at Foshay Farms in Jemseg, New Brunswick and a few Nova Scotians took advantage of that clinic. I have to say that I was disappointed that more riders/coaches from NS did not attend as this clinic was crucial. It was a fabulous opportunity.
This year the Annapolis Valley Hunt initiated a new competition – Hunt Pace, which was very successful. So much so, that I hear there are plans for more in 2010. This is good news as it gives eventing riders more opportunities to expose themselves and gets more riders out of the ring who may give our sport a try as they get more confident (XC jumping is optional on Hunt Paces), as well as being a wonderful fund-raiser for the Hounds. I dragged a couple of my ring-bound friends and they loved it and can hardly wait to go again. The horses were great for never having been out of the ring environment. Maybe they’ll get braver and try a Horse Trials……………………it’s a start.
Hobby Horse also hosted a “Fun Day” event, which focused on proper pace and control and FUN~ It was no stress and a good time was had by all – a pot-luck luncheon was served followed by riding games in the afternoon.
On a final note, HTNS is pleased and proud that Allister Marshall of Applewood Farms will be honoured (posthumously) for his contributions to the sport in Nova Scotia at the 2009 Canadian Eventing Hall of Fame under the “Builder” category.
